Why two blacks? The standard black (T410XL020) is used for everyday text documents. The Photo Black (T410XL120) is used exclusively for photo printing — it produces deeper shadows, richer tones, and more accurate skin tones than standard black. Both are required for full performance on Epson Expression Premium printers.
⚠️ Epson Firmware Warning — Important
Epson periodically pushes firmware updates that can block third-party and remanufactured cartridges. Disable automatic firmware updates before installing to avoid compatibility issues.
Steps: Printer control panel → Setup → Firmware Update → turn off Auto Update. Contact Linford support if your printer has already received a blocking update.

- Release the old cartridge — Press down on the cartridge tab and pull it straight out. Set aside for recycling.
- Unpack the new cartridge — Remove from sealed packaging. Do not shake or squeeze.
- Remove the protective tape — Peel off the orange or yellow tape from the nozzle area. Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzle.
- Insert the cartridge — Slide into the correct color-labeled slot. Press firmly until it clicks into place.
- Repeat for all 5 cartridges — Install in any order; all 5 must be installed before closing the cover.
- Close the front cover — Lower the scanner unit completely. The printer will initialize automatically.
- Run a nozzle check — Print a test page or nozzle check to confirm all 5 colors are printing correctly.
Print quality issues or difficulty getting clear prints? Run 1–2 printhead cleaning cycles from the printer's Maintenance menu (Setup → Maintenance → Head Cleaning). New remanufactured cartridges sometimes need a cleaning cycle to establish full ink flow. If quality doesn't improve after 2 cycles, contact Linford support — all cartridges are covered by our Lifetime Warranty.
FAQs
Q: What is the difference between Epson 410 and 410XL? Both fit the same Epson Expression Premium printers. The 410XL is high-yield (~500 pages black / ~650 pages color) vs. the standard 410 (~250 pages black / ~300 pages color). The XL prints approximately 2× more pages per cartridge — better value for regular use.
Q: What is the Photo Black cartridge used for? The Photo Black (T410XL120) is specifically optimized for photo printing — it produces deeper blacks, richer tonal range, and more accurate skin tones compared to the standard black. Your Epson Expression Premium printer automatically switches between standard black (for documents) and photo black (for photos) depending on what you're printing.
Q: Is Epson 410XL ink dye-based or pigment-based? The Epson 410XL series uses dye-based (Claria Premium) ink across all colors including both black cartridges. Dye ink produces vibrant, photo-quality color output and is optimized for the glossy and premium papers typically used with Expression Premium printers.
Q: Can I use the XP-7100 with 410XL cartridges? Yes. The Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 is fully compatible with both 410 and 410XL cartridges.
Q: Will Epson firmware updates block these cartridges? Epson has issued firmware updates that block third-party and remanufactured cartridges on some models. Disable automatic firmware updates before installing. Contact Linford support if you've already been affected.
Q: Will remanufactured cartridges void my Epson printer warranty? No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Epson cannot void your printer warranty solely because you used a remanufactured or third-party ink cartridge.
