FAQs
Q: What is the difference between HP 902 and HP 902XL? Both fit the same HP OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro printers. The 902XL is high-yield (~825 pages per cartridge) vs. the standard 902 (~550 pages black / ~415 pages color). The XL offers approximately 1.5–2× more pages at a lower cost per page — the better choice for regular printing.
Q: What is the difference between HP 902XL and HP 906XL? The 906XL is a step up in black ink capacity (~1,600 pages vs ~825 pages for the 902XL black), while the color cartridges remain the same yield. Both series are compatible with the same printers. If you primarily print text-heavy documents in high volumes, the 906XL black offers better cost efficiency. For balanced color and black printing, the 902XL 4-pack is the more practical choice.
Q: Which HP printers use 902XL ink? HP OfficeJet series (6950, 6951, 6954, 6956, 6958, 6962) and HP OfficeJet Pro series (6960, 6961, 6968, 6970, 6971, 6974, 6975, 6976, 6978, 6979). See the full compatible printer list above.
Q: Are HP 902 and HP 902XL interchangeable? Yes. Both cartridges fit the same printers. The only difference is ink capacity and page yield — the 902XL contains more ink and yields more pages, making it more cost-effective for regular use.
Q: Will HP firmware updates block these cartridges? HP has issued firmware updates that can block third-party cartridges on some models. Disable automatic firmware updates before installing. See our full guide.
Q: Will using compatible cartridges void my HP printer warranty? No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty solely because you used a compatible or third-party ink cartridge.
