How to Install Epson 822XL Ink Cartridges
- Power on the printer — Make sure the printer is on before opening the cartridge cover.
- Open the front cover — Lift the printer's front cover or ink compartment door. The print head will move to the replacement position.
- Release the old cartridge — Press the tab on the cartridge and pull it straight out. Set aside for recycling.
- Unpack the new cartridge — Remove from its sealed packaging. Do not shake or squeeze.
- Remove the protective tape — Peel off the orange or yellow tape from the nozzle area completely. Do not touch the metal contacts or ink nozzles.
- Insert the cartridge — Match each cartridge to its color-coded slot. Press firmly until it clicks into place.
- Repeat for all 4 cartridges — Install all cartridges being replaced before closing the cover.
- Close the front cover — Lower completely. The printer will initialize automatically.
- Run a nozzle check — Print a test page or nozzle check pattern. If any color appears faint, run 1–2 printhead cleaning cycles from the Maintenance menu.
Print looks faded after installation? This is common with new remanufactured cartridges — run 1–2 printhead cleaning cycles from printer Maintenance menu (Setup → Maintenance → Head Cleaning). Print quality typically normalizes after 1–2 cleaning cycles. If the issue persists, contact Linford support — covered by Lifetime Warranty.
FAQs
Q: What is the difference between Epson 822 and 822XL? Both fit the same WorkForce Pro printers. The 822XL is high-yield (~1,100 pages per cartridge) vs. the standard 822 (~350 pages black / ~240 pages color). The XL prints approximately 3× more pages — far more cost-effective for regular printing.
Q: Why did my black ink look faded the first week? New remanufactured cartridges sometimes need 1–2 printhead cleaning cycles to establish full ink flow from the nozzles. Go to Setup → Maintenance → Head Cleaning on your printer. After 1–2 cycles, print quality should normalize to full density.
Q: Will Epson firmware updates block these cartridges? Epson has issued firmware updates that block third-party and remanufactured cartridges on some models. Disable automatic firmware updates before installing. Contact Linford support if you've already been affected.
Q: Will remanufactured cartridges void my Epson printer warranty? No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Epson cannot void your printer warranty solely because you used a remanufactured or third-party ink cartridge.
Q: Can I refill Epson 822 cartridges myself? Technically possible but not recommended — DIY refilling risks ink leaks, printhead damage, and inconsistent quality. Linford's remanufactured cartridges are professionally refilled and tested to OEM standards, giving you the same cost savings without the risk.
Q: How should I store unused cartridges? Store sealed cartridges upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Linford Epson 822XL cartridges have a shelf life of 18–24 months unopened.
